So, to give you that space, simply purchase a few end or side tables. They will offer you a convenient place to put things including that beverage of yours, a book or a magazine, and even a light or a lamp so you can get around at night. A few other accent pieces that you could also purchase is an umbrella, some planters to spruce up the look of your space, and you could also get a few extra seating options to give yourself some choices when it comes to what you would like to sit down on. Some of the better choices out there are like Adirondack chairs, chaise lounges, and if you want to get your significant other involved in the fun, you could purchase a garden bench.

Fido, Come! How to Reliably Train Your Dog to Come When Called
Austin Neighborhood Profiles - Travis Heightsustin real estate market has to be a cute little neighborhood called Travis Heights. Featuring historic houses, charming shopping streets, great restaurants, and an unbeatable central location, this area is one of the most sought-after in Austin. The streets ramble and roll, curving over hills, through ancient trees, lending an air of serenity to a neighborhood in close proximity to Downtown Austin, as well as the bustling Soco shopping area.
The borders of Travis Heights are Riverside Dr. to the north, Interstate 35 to the east, Oltorf to the South, and South Congress to the west, although the area just west of South Congress features many of the same amenities. The older houses date to the late 1880s, when the only way across the Colorado River was by ferry. When the first bridge was completed, development soared, with a huge surge in the 1920s. Most of the area is made up of single-family homes from each stage of development.
The word "development" is a call to arms in Travis Heights. Most agree that the rejuvenation of the previously sketchy SoCo (SOuth COngress) strip has enhanced the area, bringing hip cafes and shops within walking distance, and adding to the popularity, as well as the property value, of the area. Still, residents of this charming older community have banded together to ensure that commercial development is kept at bay, and that the feel of the area is not diluted by the building of brand-new houses.
SoCo is home to the fabulously refurbished Hotel San Jose, whose courtyard is a popular place to stop for a drink. The Continental Club, one of Austin's oldest and coolest music venues, is nestled between tattoo parlors, trattorias, Amy's Ice Cream and more. With clothing shops, gourmet markets, and one of Austin's most iconic restaurants, Guero's, all within a few blocks, this vibrant shopping district is one of Austin's most exciting cultural pulse-points.
The twenty-three acre Blunn Creek Greenbelt bisects Travis Heights from Riverside Drive in the north to Live Oak on the southern end. This thick swath of rolling, wooded landscape features hike and bike trails, lots of fields and open space, and the charming and popular Big Stacy and Little Stacy parks. The major attraction of Big Stacy Park is the free swimming pool, which is open year-round. The pool is flanked by a small field, with a few picnic tables and grills. Little Stacy park holds one of the finest playgrounds in the city, with structures tailored to toddlers as well as older kids, swings, and a wading pool as well. With tennis courts adjacent to it, and lots of shade trees, this is a popular spot for Travis Heights families.
Norwood Estate Park at Riverside Drive and IH35 is Austin's own leash-free dog park. Completely enclosed by fence, dogs can run free, exploring the wooded perimeters, or chasing balls and each other across the wide expanse. With chairs and tables for the humans, and water for the canines, this park is frequented by dog-owners throughout the city.
Travis Heights homes continue to rise in price, marking this neighborhood as one of the best in the city.
trouble with. What really frustrates dog owners is:
a) Getting the dog to respond no matter what, and/or
b) Maintaining the command.
How many of you started out in your training with a beautiful response to the recall, only to have it deteriorate to the point where you're lucky if the dog even flicks an ear in your direction when you call him? I've had to fix "broken" recalls with my own dogs, so I feel your pain. Whether you're just starting to teach your dog to come or fixing a broken recall, there are some things to keep in mind.
First off, the Golden Rule of The Recall: when in the process of training it, never utter the command "come" unless you can enforce it. See, the trick is to convince dear Fido that he does not have a choice in the matter, and that when you call him, he comes, no questions asked. How? By making the recall such a habit that he doesn't even have to think about it. You accomplish this with...
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE (and practice some more). First, you practice at home with Fido on leash. Minimal distractions. After he's responding 100% of the time, take the leash off. Then you practice out in the neighborhood - there are more distractions here, so put the leash back on.
Once he's responding 100% of the time in the neighborhood, take the leash off and put on a long line ( a long training leash or clothesline). Then you take him to a park. There are even more distractions now, so he's back on leash. Seeing the pattern here? Every time you up the distractions, you go back to square one, with the leash on.
Practicing doesn't have to take up all of your time. Just do a couple sessions per day where you work in 10 - 15 recalls each. Make sure that really good things happen when he comes to you! Give him treats, throw a ball, tell him what a genius he is.
Then (and this is equally important), let him go back to whatever it was he was doing before you called him. You don't want him to learn that coming to you means the fun is over. So call him, praise/treat him, then encourage him to go back to sniffing that fascinating bush.
No dancing allowed, Fido. Ever seen a person call their dog to them, only to have the dog run up to them just out of arm's reach, and then gleefully dance away? The dog thinks it's hilarious and it's kind of funny to watch, but it sucks to be the person involved. To avoid this situation, teach Fido that "come" means "come here and let me grab your collar." When training the recall, call him to you and make a point of touching his collar before you reward him.
Or if you'd prefer, you could teach him that "come" means "come here and sit still at my side." Both techniques serve to prevent Fido from learning the recall dance.
Do not recall him off leash unless you are 99% sure he will listen. Let's say you've only been training on leash with moderate-level distractions. You take Fido to the dog park and let him off leash. He is having a great time socializing with his buddies. Now, you know that there is absolutely no way he is going to come back to you when you call at this point. So don't stand there going, "Fido, come! Come! Fido... come on! Let's go!" while Fido cheerfully ignores you. Remember the golden rule? You can't enforce it in this situation. All it will teach him is that "come" is optional. So walk over and grab him (nicely) yourself.
Now, let's say that instead of him being off leash, you have him on a long line. He's socializing with his pals again. You say "come," gently reeling him in if necessary. When he gets to you, tell him he's awesome, then quickly let him get back to the other dogs.
Now for the other Golden Rule of the Recall: Never ever under any circumstances, call your dog to punish him. Doesn't matter how angry, tired, frustrated or cranky you are. Calling a dog to yell at him or angrily stuff him in his kennel is the quickest way to ruin your recall. Fido won't know that you're punishing him for digging up your lawn. He'll think you're punishing him for coming to you.
You can see how this might be a problem.
On a similar note, don't call your dog if you are, for any reason, about to do something unpleasant. If Fido hates taking a bath, don't call him when it's time to wash him. If you are heading off to go to work for eight hours, don't call Fido to lock him up in his crate. This will have the same effect as punishment and will make Fido wary about coming to you in the future. In situations like these, you'll have to just go and grab him yourself.
Bottom line:
-Create a strong recall by practicing often when you can enforce it
-Start with minimal distractions and work your way up
-Don't call your dog when you know he's gonna ignore you
-Make sure nothing but good things happen when he comes to you
Use these pointers consistently, and I guarantee you you'll see improvement in your recall work.

Our Cat, Winnie, is a Lesson in Accepting What Is
Boxer Dogs - In Case Of Emergencyer dog breeds, requires a lot of responsibilities, patience and love. The moment you decided to take home a new puppy means that you are well aware of the responsibilities intertwined to a dog owner. But knowing the responsibilities alone is not enough in order for you to become a responsible and good dog owner. You must adhere to these responsibilities not just for your own glory as good dog owner but more importantly for the sake of your beloved pet. While you are doing all you can to keep your pet healthy and happy by feeding well-balanced diet, giving required exercise and regular grooming, may you not forget that responsibility doesn't end there. Accidents or emergencies happen anytime whether you want it or not, whether you are ready for it or not. Since you cannot stop an emergency nor predict when will it happen, you just have to arm yourself with first aid ideas that could make a difference between life and death of your dog.
Keep a first aid safety kit on hand. The kit must be a waterproof container with label containing the phone numbers of your vet, the nearest animal emergency hospital, emergency hotlines and poison control hotlines as well as your name and contact information. Include also a list of your emergency contact person's numbers, your dog's name, age, sex, breed and any health problems, a copy of your pet's vaccination records as well as photo of your pet in case needed.
First aid kit for dogs must include supplies such as roll cotton, cotton balls, gauze pads and tape, hydrogen peroxide, hydrocortisone ointment, scissors, eyewash, silver nitrate, tweezers, oral syringes, electrolyte fluid, at least two towels, exam gloves, elastic wrap, emergency ice pack, thermometer, rubbing alcohol, styptic powder, aspirin and plastic baggies. When traveling, it is important to have bottled water, food/water bowl, spare leash, crate and muzzle.
If someone is taking care of your pet while you are away, be sure to discuss your pet with them. Show them where you keep the first aid kit and vet records and discuss about your vet and his contact info, the emergency animal hospital info, how to contact you and the name and contact info of a relative or friend you trust to make decisions if you are unavailable.
You may not know when, where or in what way emergency will occur but by having first aid kit and knowing what to do in case of emergency, you know you are ready.
gs are very active at night, keep in mind that having the hedgehog cage in your bedroom could result in interrupted sleep for light sleepers.
this. Right after we had to put her brother down because of kidney failure, she had a similar episode. I would have to guess that it has to do with feelings of vulnerability. But she's a cat! What can I know about what motivates her?
So what does all this have to do with accepting "what is?" On the other occasions when she decided she was going to live under our bed from now on, I thought it just wasn't right. Why should she do that? She should come out and eat and do all the regular stuff. Why should I have to coddle her? Why doesn't she just get with it? How can I fix it? Just what the heck is going through her little walnut of a brain? (Did you know that they say a cat's brain is about the size of a whole walnut? It explains a lot.) At any rate, the upshot of all that non-acceptance is that it causes me a lot of stress. I mean a lot. And I worry about her. Our cat home veterinary book doesn't have much to say about this issue and there is no way she would ever consent to talk to a cat psychologist.
The thing is I can't know what is going on inside her little walnut. I don't know why she is suddenly afraid of me in some situations and not in others. And I can't fix it. And neither can anyone else (she has never been to a vet and may never visit one). So I have decided to just accept that for now (and maybe forever, who knows) she is our cat-who-lives-under-our-bed.
I give her food in her bowl that is pushed well under the bed and away from the outside edges. There is very little "head room" under there and the bowl does have a very low rim, but still I wonder how she manages to eat it. She does have a habit of eating with her feet, but the bowl appears to have been licked clean, so I decided to risk annoying her and watched the process. She pulls the bowl directly under her mouth and starts scooping the food into her mouth with her paw. She is a strangely amazing cat. When Bear was still alive, he would sometimes jump into our bathroom window before Winnie could. This was a highly coveted spot as it offered a high vantage point for peering outside. So she would run into the bathroom, get his attention and run out through our bedroom and into the dining room where she would meow loudly. She kept up the back and forth until he could stand it no longer and he would leave the window to see what was up. Then Winnie would dash into our bathroom to claim the window. How's that for using the old walnut?
She also gets her hairball remedy treats each morning...under the bed. I only see her during the day if I go and lift the bed skirt and look at her. Mostly I keep this to a minimum to avoid annoying her and only do it to be certain she is still breathing. She comes out at night, usually after we have gone to bed, to use the litter box and drink some water. She will also eat some of the dry food that I leave out for her. She comes in the very early morning to lay on my stomach and purr as if nothing were wrong, only to disappear as soon as it seems likely that I am about to get out of bed.
It still all seems a bit silly to me; I can't quite get over that. But if I want people to just accept me as I am, well then, I should at least show others the same courtesy...including our cat. So I am not trying to drag her out from under there. I am not trying to make her conform to my idea of proper cat behavior. I accept that this is how it now is between us. I don't really believe that she will continue in this behavior for the rest of her life. I am not entirely certain that it would make for a healthy lifestyle, but for now, this is how it is and I'm okay with that; and it feels wonderful.
Accepting what is and not resisting it doesn't mean that you let the world walk all over you. It just means that you stop judging situations as good or bad. Things are just what they are; if you don't label them then they have no power over you. Within this framework, going with the flow so to speak, you can still work to achieve the outcomes that you desire. And sometimes you just "flow" right into what you want with no effort at all. Case in point, it is many hours since I first started to write this article and just moments ago, there was Winnie, sitting beside my computer chair and meowing her head off at me. That usually means FEED ME. NOW. So she is coming out of her self imposed exile. Still, I will keep an open mind about what tomorrow will bring.

Are You The Pack Leader for Dogs?
Training a Dog to Keep Quiets friction between a dog and its owner. Fortunately, there are effective and inexpensive ways to get about training a dog to keep quiet. Obedience school can be costly in terms of time and money, so let's take a look at the most effective ways to cheaply and effectively go about training a dog to keep quiet.
First off, shock collars are used for a wide range of behavioral modification training in dogs including training a dog to keep quiet. As you're likely aware, a shock collar works by sending a small shock to the dog every time he misbehaves to retrain bad habits as soon as they happen. While shock collars are effective for retraining a number of bad dog habits, some people see them as being inhumane and cruel, so it's not for everyone.
BarkOff is another device used by owners but unlike a shock collar, it's only used for training a dog to keep quiet rather than other habits. Also unlike a shock collar, the device is completely humane and safe for your pet and doesn't hurt them in any way. Instead of shocking your dog and causing him physical pain, the device emits high-frequency sound waves which are only heard by dogs and at a completely comfortable level which is guaranteed not to hurt your dog or damage their ears or hearing in any way.
It simply answers every time your dog barks with these sound waves which immediately work for training a dog to keep quiet because they capture his or her attention. The device essentially interrupts your dog every time it begins to bark.
per and easy trainability make the black Labrador dog a popular pet for millions of people in the US. These dogs range from about fifty to about seventy-five pounds, with males getting as heavy as ninety pounds. They are strongly built and have a dense coat that makes them resistant to weather. Labs worked in the water even during the winter season, after all. The black lab has what's referred to as an "otter" tail, that improves its ability to swim, as well as furry webbed toes.
Chocolate and yellow labs are also popular pets, and have been around for a little less time than the black Labrador dog. The first labs were black, or black with some brown markings. Chocolate labs appeared from time to time in the late 19th century, and yellow labs a little later. But it took longer for these colors to be recognized by breed standards. The black Labrador dog is the basic labrador retriever.
Look for dogs that have friendly, outgoing temperaments, and are eager to please. They shouldn't be aggressive toward people or to other animals. A good black Labrador puppy will have parents with no known genetic defects, and will pass a vet checkup immediately after adoption. Choosing the right dog now can make a huge difference in the ease of keeping your pet later.
If you're adopting a dog from a breeder, be sure to talk to the breeder and ask a lot of questions. You're looking for a dog that comes from good stock and has been taken care of. Some breeders are just after the money that comes from cute purebred puppies, and don't do the work to make sure that the animals they're breeding are really of the appropriate quality. This can be bad for the breed in the long run, and could get you a pet that will have a lot of health problems later on. It pays to choose carefully.
Get the right black Labrador dog, and you've got a companion for life. These dogs need plenty of attention and exercise, and they shouldn't be neglected. But as a hunting companion, or as part of an active family, a black Labrador dog can be an amazing pet.

Westie Puppies - Success Tips On How to Best Prepare for Your Westie!e before you bring home your westie puppy. The needs of westie puppies are not tremendous, but there are a few things that you must have in place to give your westie a safe, happy transition into your life
It is much easier and safer to prevent your west highland terrier pup from getting into and destroying things than it is to watch him every second. Remember that any item they chew on is also an item that is potentially swallowed: bits of cloth, tassels, string, and of course, shoes.
Secure everything that can be picked up or moved. Electrical cords are a particular danger. A solution called 'bitter apple' can be sprayed on cords, and anything else that cannot be relocated, to discourage chewing.
Dog trainers recommend that you never give your new puppy the freedom to roam the house while you are gone. A crate will keep the dog secure, and can also be used for safe travel. Pick one that is big enough for the dog to stand up and turn around in. Baby gates, or pet gates, will keep it confined to a room of the house that has a durable floor.
Since your westie will not be old enough for reliable housetraining until about four months of ages, this may be essential to keeping your carpets stain-free.
Your westie dog will need to eat, and it is wisest to ask the breeder what he has been eating, and buy that brand. You may change the food later, but in the beginning he will have enough adjustments to make without a change in diet. Food and water bowls should be of stainless steel, since most plastics will become victims of teething.
To encourage it to chew on acceptable items, have a selection of sturdy chew toys on hand. These should be made of Cressite, or English rubber, although tennis balls and nylabones are also acceptable.
You will want to get your west highland terrier puppy used to a collar and leash as quickly as possible. Buy a light collar and leash, suitable for puppies, and get an ID tag to go with them. The grooming routine is also something that it needs to experience as early as possible. Have a brush or comb ready at hand.
Some owners recommend a bed of old towels, while others suggest faux lambskin. Like everything else you buy for your westie puppy, whatever you choose for a bed should be both washable and durable, as well as comfortable for your dog.
Last, but not least, find a veterinarian. A reputable west highland white terrier breeder will even let you bring the dog to a vet before purchase, in order to ensure that the dog you bring home is healthy.

After Marriage - 4 Surefire Ways to Kill the Passion in Your Relationship
Should You Crate Your Dog?
While this decision is not a life threatening issue and there have been no heated debates on the subject that I know of, there has been some controversy among owners about the practice of using dog crates. This article is intended to provide some clarity so you can make up your own mind.
On one side of the aisle are those owners that view crating as something similar to the putting your dog in jail. So the crate to them, seems like a prison and putting Fido into it, as punishment. I would agree only to the extent that some owners do misuse it as a place to banish the dog - not a good idea and also one that doesn't work.
On the other side are those who think letting a puppy or new dog have free rein around the house - especially if left alone even for a short while, is just asking for trouble. To them, dog crates are a convenient tool that can be used humanely as a training aide to assist in channeling a dog's behavior.
Dogs are natural explorers and left unsupervised, are definitely going to investigate every corner of the house - often leaving telltale evidence in the undeniable excitement of their adventures.
Even without the excitement, accidents will occur. It doesn't take long for a dog to get himself into all kinds of trouble - so why put him to the test. Plus there are plenty of danger zones around a home. This, coupled with the fact that dogs like to put almost everything in their mouths, considerably raises the bar on danger for a home alone dog.
Dog crates not only can be used to keep a dog safe, but are also very useful during puppy housetraining when dogs have far less control over their bladder. Dogs will not normally soil their crate bed so do put a cozy cushion in the crate for extra comfort. The most important thing to remember in using crates correctly is not to over-use them after the housetraining phase is past. Ideally, a crate should be viewed by a pet in a positive light as his place of refuge to go to when he needs a break.
When dogs are raised in the wild they are kept safe in a den built by the mother. Dog crates are the human-made equivalent of a den and a dog is introduced to the crate at a very early age, will come to view it as its den, willingly using it to feel comforted and safe as he needs to. To encourage a dog to use a crate, locate it in the corner of any room used by the family where he can freely have access to it. Being able to see the comings and goings of the family while in his den will satisfy his instincts to be close to his "pack". And, if you stock it with some of his favorite toys, it will make it more enticing.
If a dog really gets to enjoy his crate (den), he is more likely to choose it as his preferred spot for overnight sleeping - leaving you to enjoy your bed more completely! Likewise, the family couch may become less crowded. Moreover, a crate is mobile so you can use it to take the dog to the vet, travel by air, or for greater safety when traveling in the car.
Dog crates come in a variety of styles and sizes and are normally made of plastic or wire. Many come with bumpers and interior mats. Exterior covers are also available for a more designer look. Wire crates are a good choice if your dog breed has strong chewing tendencies, while plastic ones are needed for airline travel. Getting a crate that's adjustable is a good choice, so that you can increase the interior space as your puppy grows.
So, should you crate your dog? Hopefully, this article has helped you answer that question.

Constipation in Dogs
Health Benefits of Having a Exotic Fish the maintenance of its environment is a simple and recognized as being effective in breaking the monotony of solitary life. According to statistics, more and more people live alone. To put life in their homes they fill them with plants, but it is often not enough to have a sense of companionship. Many will want a pet, but their busy schedules, their allergies or their standards of cleanliness will prevent them from adopting a cat or a dog.
The purchase of a tropical fish is a solution increasingly being offered by various psychologists, counselors and coaches influenced by the art of Feng Shui. Indeed, in addition to recognizing the relaxing properties of an aquarium in the house and the movements of fish that inhabit it, they argue that it is beneficial for people living alone to take care of the fishes habitat. Moreover, since these professionals are usually very involved in their careers, they are proposed to have an activity that is not stressful and reinforces in all of their skills and sensitivity.
Taking care of an aquarium is an art that requires a lot of attention, sensitivity and patience. Everything is important, the choice of fish, the diversity of their color, their rarity and compatibility, the choice of plants, temperature and pH of the water, objects of maintenance, etc.. In short, the aquarium draws upon the talents and intelligence of those who volunteer. This discipline can lead an individual to have more confidence in his abilities and he can exercise control over life, about his life.
The purchase of a tropical fish is not confined only to the acquisition of it but to create a whole environment. This responsibility is often a source of passion as it gives access to the diversity of the aquatic world. The novice in the hobby will opt for a simple setup. He will choose various ornamental fishes that can coexist and various aquatic plants to beautify the decor of the aquarium.
Over time the novice will want a more complex setup with more tropical fishes and plants, his study of the aquarium will then have to be perfected. The choice of fish, their compatibility, the plants and sea anemones are more complex and he must somehow become a specialist to take care of the world he creates. His tank will increasingly become a source of pride and accomplishment. It boasts of compliments do on its implementation.

Too lengthy cape might swallow him up thus preventing him to walk. Cut the design with an additional inch on its boarder so to provide an adjustment. Be sure to have a tie (the length is in line with the circumference of your dog's neck) connected to the cape so that you can secure the cape around your dog's neck.
he removal of salt and water from the feces. Both will still continue to be removed, and as a result it causes extremely hard and dry stools.
Symptoms:
The initial signs that your dog will show you may take several days to actually surface, unless you observe your dog very closely every time they are let out to relieve themselves. However, most owners do not observe this closely until they think something is wrong.
The first symptoms of constipation will develop very early and you can catch it just as early if watch, as your dog will strain for long periods and than only produces a dry and firm stool. In most cases it will be very small compared to their regular defecation. In some cases, your dog may produce nothing at all in this attempt.
As it increases in severity, your dog will strain even harder and for longer periods. In this case, the next symptom that you will see will be a small amount of liquid being produced, but still no normal stool. By now your dog may also be vomiting, have absolutely no appetite, and has become very depressed.
Causes:
Constipation in dogs has several potential causes and it is important to remember that every dog sometime during their life will become constipated. This is quite normal, but reoccurring constipation is not normal and as such the actual underlying cause will have to be determined.
The most common cause is always related to your dogs diet and will include the type of diet as well as the amount of water your dog is consuming. If your dog is eating a very lower fiber pet food or a homemade diet that is low in fiber, this is most likely the cause. But it does not mean that you have to drastically change their diet if there is a reason you have them on a low fiber or homemade diet.
By simply adding methylcellulose in supplement or form as well as bran or pumpkin supplements or treats, it will almost immediately remedy the constipation. It will also help if your dog eats a lot of bones or for that matter sticks or sand, as they can also form hard masses that will cause constipation. And as all owners know, from time to time, your dog may eat almost anything that gets in their path.
Sufficient water supply is also a major cause as your dog must have 2.5 times the amount of water verses the amount of food that they eat. If they eat 8 ounces of food a day, they must have 20 ounces of water. If your dog is getting older or for some reason they have limited access to exercise, it can also cause constipation.
There are also several drugs as well as some supplements that can cause constipation in your pet. Antihistamines, iron supplements in excess, as well as diuretics can bound your dog up as well.
There are also obstructions that may be the actual cause and they can be outside of the colon wall or inside the wall. Obstructions outside of the wall, called extra-luminal disorders, include a narrowed pelvic canal as the result of a fracture, a prostrate enlargement, or enlarged nymph nodes directly above the colon.
Intra-luminal disorders include colonic or rectal tumors or polyps, some type of a rectal foreign body, as well as perianal hernias or rectal prolapse. A rectal prolapse is the protrusion of rectal tissue through the anus. However, there are two other potential underlying disorders that may trigger constipation: Neurological and metabolic disorders.
Neurological disorders include some type of a paralysis that may be temporary or permanent, a spinal cord or disc disease, or lead poisoning.
Metabolic and endocrine disorders can also be the underlying cause as they impair the transmission of feces through the colon. This would include kidney disease, hypothyroidism, and hypokalemia, which are decreased potassium levels in your dog. There is also a disorder called hyperparathyroidism, which results in the calcium levels in your dog becoming severely elevated.
Summary:
Constipation in dogs will occur some time in your dogs lifetime and in most cases adjustments in their diet as well as their water supply will rectify it. However, if it starts to happen more than a couple of times, you will need to immediately have your dog examined by your veterinarian as it is now a condition that has to be corrected.

What to Keep, What to Throw Away - Organizing Your Homeceilings, floors and walls, my personal items each time were thrown into boxes and stored in the garage. These boxes have been there for 5 years. Heck if I remembered what was in them. Being a single mom, my life has always moved at marathon speed tending to my son, taking care of the dogs, and working in a dynamic office environment. A single Mom wears multiple hats and never has free time. I have my paper bag ready for those hyperventilation moments. Since the beginning of those projects, my two car garage had become a one car compact garage. The garage was filled from one end to the other and to the ceiling with boxes, storage trunks, suitcases, books, toys and sports paraphernalia. The disorganization was driving me crazy. I had to take control of this growing behemoth and minimize the chaos. My cup had finally runneth over. I came up with a plan now that I had a little more time. My son is older, in high school and his friends have wheels. My taxi driver hat can retire.
Since I could not move around in the garage, I parked my car outside for several days. I started gathering items I could reach, identify and no longer wanted. I joined friends in their garage sale. I was inexperienced at garage sale savviness and lingo. It was my first one; I wasn't sure what to do. Friends had told me to place price tags on all the items. How do you know what to charge? I did a little homework and searched the web. I found the Salvation Army's website had a great valuation guideline for secondhand items. I started there with my pricing. As a side note, you will never collect anything close to what you paid for the item, just get rid of it and let someone else enjoy it. Clothing items were priced at $5 and under, designer dresses, $25 and under (some were originally $300 and up and had never been worn), books 3 for $1, toys $2 - $3, furniture $10 - $15, electronic pricing can be left open for best offer and small items $.25 -.$50. By the end of the garage sale, I had collected $450. I never new garage sales could be so much fun and profitable. My negotiation skills were challenged during this event. For price tags, you can find pre-printed stick-on ones at your local office supply store and left-over items can be donated to charitable organizations, obtain a receipt. You can use it for your tax return if you itemize. Advertise your garage sale in Craig's List and list a few Doorbuster items.
Having cleared some space, I was able to set up a long banquet table. I used the table to hold my boxes while I gleaned through the contents. I bought a few smaller boxes in order to re-organize and break-down larger ones. I wanted boxes I could lift myself. I went through all my financial records and shredded records I no longer required. The IRS recommends keeping documents for 3 years if you have consistently filed your taxes on time. You can visit the IRS' website and search under Record keeping for time frames that are applicable to your situation.
1. Home Owner - keep all receipts and documents for home improvements, you will need them if you sell your house. If you have receipts on thermal paper, make a copy and maybe scan too. Ink on thermal paper vanishes. Renovations will add to your original purchase price which reduces your taxable gain if you sell for more than the purchase price. Keep mortgage records. Should you refinance, many of the documents you gathered previously may be beneficial to future refinances. Keep all titles in a fireproof box or safe. That goes for your cars and other valuable items you may own.
2. Medical Records - Have the hospital or doctor provide you with copies of your CT Scans, X-rays, MRI's or other tests you've had performed, a doctor provided me that advice years ago. Hospitals are notorious for losing or misfiling documents. You control your medical history. Keep copies of all vaccinations, when performed. You never know when you may need a good Tetanus shot again, 5 year expiration if I remember correctly.
3. School Records - I keep all report cards, awards and diplomas. For children, I keep a few small special projects they completed for a particular school year.
4. Kid's Toys - If the toy is in good condition and I have the original package, I may save it if I feel it could become a collectible some day. I wish I had my first Barbie or Chatty Cathy Doll. My cousin has her original Howdy Dowdy Marionette in its box.
5. Photos - In my spare time, I scan all photos. I have created two folders on my hard drive for my two kids. I have scanned all my Mom's family photos, over 1000. I love viewing the photos in Slide Show mode.
6. Create a Box For Each Person in Your Household - For each child, I have created a box that contains their school records, medical records, school pictures, school papers, awards, family birthday cards with messages, etc. I have chronological folders in each box. I feel they will be able to go through each folder some day and reminisce about their life and share with their children. Medical records may come in handy when they have children. At some point, these records will be scanned too.
For each new box I create, I attach a masking tape label. I write the contents of the box on the label and date it. I like masking tape because I can easily remove it to add a new one should I make modifications. The smaller boxes make everything more convenient. I feel if I were to move, I have everything inventoried, boxed and ready to go. I will number each box and inventory it on my computer as well. Soon life will be at my finger tips. Cleaning through the remaining boxes resulted in additional garage sale items and $200. I continued my organization with my closets and other rooms; I removed the knick knack dust collector items. I finally feel I can breathe. Start your organization today; it can be profitable for you too, mentally and financially. Before closing, I have one more tidbit to share with you that I heard on the radio, KFI 640 am, this past weekend. They discussed the "321" approach for backing up files on your computer. Make 3 copies, use 2 different formats, store 1 off site. Thank You. Kathryn Alexander.

Small Dog Breeds For Small Homesmall home or apartment doesn't mean you can't have a dog. There are many small and toy breeds that make excellent pets for small homes. But even small dogs like variety and exercise, so it is important that you are prepared to spend time with your dog, take her for walks and ensure that she gets the best care. Once you have made that commitment to yourself, you can choose which breed of dog is most suitable to you and your lifestyle.
Small dog breeds make the cutest puppies, and one of the cutest small dog puppies around is the Maltese. This popular small dog breed generally grows to no more than six or seven pounds in weight, and has a beautiful white coat. The Maltese is a very ancient dog breed and has a strong constitution, though it should not be kept in very hot areas, due to the thick coat. The Maltese enjoys walks and is very playful. A great companion if you want a lively little pet and will enjoy the grooming chores.
Another delightful long haired small dog breed is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. This lovely small dog is as courtly as its name and weighs about twice as much as a Maltese. The King Charles is a friendly and sociable small dog, well known for giving a lifetime of loyal attachment. This is the ideal dog if you prefer to lead a quiet life.
Top of the line in long haired small dog breeds is the Lowchen, as long as you enjoy spending long hours brushing, and don't mind the hefty price tag. The beautiful `Little Lion' dog can cost around $1000. A true indoors dog, the Lowchen is no exercise fanatic but owners have reported `separation anxiety' to be a problem, so don't get this dog breed if you are away for long hours every day.
If you want a pet with a shorter coat, try the Miniature Fox Terrier. This lively little dog will need lots of exercise, and appreciates having a collection of toys. Fox terriers can be yappy, so your pet may need to go to obedience school if she annoys the neighbors. This is a healthy and low maintenance dog breed, suitable for the owner who just wants to enjoy having a pet without all the grooming fuss.
A more sleek and elegant short haired pet is the Italian greyhound, and if you want a pet that enjoys exercise, this is the dog breed for you. Owners report that the Italian greyhound is a very well behaved dog, but prone to stress, so it is not a suitable pet where there are small children. This dog breed grows to a height of about 15 inches but is very lightweight - around 5 pounds.
The Welsh corgi is one of the classic small dog breeds, and very popular with Queen Elizabeth II of England. They will be popular with you, too, if you want a playful, affectionate pet. The Welsh corgi comes in two breeds, the Cardigan and the Pembrokeshire. The Pembrokeshire is smaller and more popular than the Cardigan, but both make faithful pets for small homes.
Finally, there is the ultimate small dog breed for apartment living - the toy poodle. Naturally popular in Europe, the toy poodle is somewhat high maintenance regarding its fluffy coat, but a surprisingly undemanding pet. Toy poodles love to play and appreciate having their own toys, but they are easy to train and adapt to their owners. Like most pets, the toy poodle prefers company to being left alone, but if you spend a lot of time away from home, perhaps you should think twice about getting a pet anyway!

With excitement urination the best cure is prevention and that is achieved by not allowing your dog to get overly excited. And the best way to stop your dog getting over excited in certain circumstances is to expose him/her to those situations more often until they no longer get excited to the extent that they urinate. Puppies will eventually grow out of excitement urination as they develop better bladder control.
Submissive urination is something that is common in the wild, where dogs, being pack animals, show their submissiveness to the leader of the pack by lowering themselves and urinating. Where a dog is showing signs of submissive urination this is effectively a sign of insecurity and is very often associated with dogs that have been abused.
It can be difficult to correct submissive urination and quite often the best method is to ignore what is happening and focus on developing a better relationship with your pet and help to build it's self confidence.

How to Prevent Your Dog from Scent Marking its Territoryg on earth for a dog to want to mark its territory, and to them, it is their way of saying to the world, "Hello, I was here, smell the scent that belongs to me!"
As normal as this behavior is to all dogs, it may be hard to accept for dog owners, for it is not a characteristic that can be curbed easily. One's house gets soaked with the pet dog's urine, and it can be very annoying as some items may be costly to replace, and one may get tired of constantly having to clean up the mess. Being a dog owner, you may sometimes find your prized shoes or imported rugs soaking and stinking from your dog's habit. A dog finds new items that has unfamiliar odors to mark, and to him, he is just doing what he thinks is right.
Here are some tips that can assist you in cutting down on your dog's habit:
Instead of treating the symptom, prevent the situation from occurring is more effective. The most effective way to prevent your dog from urinating around your house is to fix him. Bring your dog to a veterinarian to be neutered or spayed. That will cause the body's chemicals and hormones that is pumped up by sexual heat to reduce by a certain amount. This way your dog's attitude will change, but remember to consult your veterinarian about the changes.
Another way that may work is to place items that your dog respects in specific area that he likes to urine at. For example, put his food and water dish near the place that he had marked and it may prevent him from urinating at that area again. Dogs are clean animals, and they do not like to dirty the places where they eat and sleep.
if you use a little patience and your dog's natural instincts, it doesn't have to be so bad. Dogs are fairly clean animals and will try to avoid soiling any area in which they usually eat or sleep. You can use this instinct to your advantage when housebreaking your furry friend.
There are a few different methods for teaching your dog not to use the house as his personal toilet, but one of the most effective seems to be the "start small" approach. This means that when you bring your dog or puppy home, use one specific room or area of the house as your dog's special place. Get your dog his own bed, or make him one, and put it in this special place. Spend as much time with your dog as you can in his special room, whether it's playing with him there or just taking him there to sleep or eat. It's important to make your dog's special room fun for him, so that he enjoys being there.
At first, keep your dog in his bed when he isn't in his special room. He may initially have accidents in that room, but he'll realize soon enough that it's his room. Once he realizes this, he'll avoid eliminating there.
At the same time, designate a toilet area where your dog should learn to eliminate. Each time he needs to go out, take him to this area so that he will begin to make a habit of using this area as his toilet. There are two key things to keep in mind in regard to your dog's toilet area. First, don't keep him confined without access to this area for too long. If your dog can't get outside for too long, he'll be forced to eliminate in his special place, potentially setting back his house training significantly. Second, keeping your dog on a feeding schedule can help you know when he'll need access to the toilet area. If he eats at the same time each day, chances are that he'll need to eliminate at the same time each day as well. Knowing his schedule and making the toilet area accessible to him at these times can only help your training.
Once your dog has learned to eliminate only in his toilet area and isn't having accidents in his special area, you can begin to expand his area to the rest of the house. Go slowly, allowing him access to one room at a time and monitoring him closely when he is in these rooms. Allow him to play, eat and even sleep in the new room, but only under supervision. He'll soon learn that this new room has become part of his special area; once he makes the association, you can allow him access to the rest of the house, one room at a time.
Remember, house training can take time, and your dog is sure to make mistakes. Severely reprimanding him for accidents will only scare him and slow down the learning process. If you've put some time into the process, and your dog still has accidents, a quick trip to the vet may be necessary to rule out a physical reason. Urinary tract infections and other medical concerns can cause your dog to eliminate while sleeping.
Barring any medical problems, your dog should be house trained in no time!

Marine Turtles at Coral Bay, Ningaloo Reefjor breeding areas for sea turtles. During the breeding season, between November and February, you can book a tour to see the Green, Loggerhead and Hawksbill turtles (three of the world's seven marine turtle species) come ashore to lay their eggs or to see the hatchlings rushing back to the sea.
The nesting is becoming increasingly popular as a nature-based tourism experience in Coral Bay.
Foxes are the single biggest predator of the turtle nests where in some instances they are digging up to 60 percent of the nest to eat the eggs. They also prey on hatchlings as they emerge from the sand.
Baiting is carried out at strategic locations along the coastal strip to protect the major turtle nesting sites. Other threats include over-harvesting of turtles and eggs, predation of hatchlings by birds, feral pigs, dogs and goannas, pollution and changes to important habitats, especially nesting beaches. Four-wheel drives are another threat to the turtles because the tyre grooves they leave behind can create trenches that the hatchlings fall into, preventing them reaching the sea.
The effectiveness of conservation operations can be increased if people are more aware of the impact their activities can have on the turtles.
ties including illegal trade and harvest; unsustainable harvest; some forms of commercial fishing such as trawling and long-lining; and loss of habitat such as seagrass beds, coral reef ecosystems and intact coastlines. In the Ningaloo regions specifically, marine turtles face the following pressures:
o Fox predation
o Inappropriate recreational and tourism
o Activities such as disturbance and four-wheel driving on nesting beaches
o Boat strikes
o Specific fishing practices, such as long lining
o Pollution from developments both marine and land based
This page not only has a lot of information about marine turtles, but check out the other related topics including:

Try to incorporate some of your puppy training sessions with events and people that will help mark the commands on the puppy's mind. He should respond to commands when they are spoken by others as well as you. He should also respond to commands when he really wants to do something else - like eat dinner or run after a ball.
Make sure that everyone who has a hand in your puppy's training says the commands in the same way and follows up with the same reward system and techniques. It will only confuse your puppy to get different information from different family members or to get one treat from one family member and three treats from another.
The most important aspect of successful puppy training is fun! Enjoy yourself and your puppy will enjoy his training, getting excited when it's time to 'perform.'

Training Older Dogs - What Does Adult Dog Training Involve?. The dog was used to living in a farm house and hence was always outside. When he came to live with this family who lived in an apartment the dog couldn't cope, it would dirty the house and the family did not know what to do eventually they had to return the dog.
But there are several adult dog training courses available and even books and DVDs that guide you in training older dogs-most of these are available online also.
Adult dogs are often great companions and if you rescue a dog from a shelter not only will you feel better the dog will also love the attention of living in a family. In fact it is easier to potty train an adult dog than a puppy because an adult dog has more bladder control and is calmer and in control. It receives instructions more easily.
Once you bring the dog home take it outside and show it the stop where you want it to do potty.
Put the dog on a leash and take it to the spot and wait till it finishes potty. Once the dog has done it, praise it by patting it. Now take the dog and show him the crate. Put a few treats and old clothes in the crate and allow the dog to find the treat.
Now keep a close eye on the dog do you know when it wants to go out. Initially the dog may have an accident but do not be too harsh with it. Correct it right away so that the dog knows that you do not like it and it upsets you.
If you see the dog squatting inside the house say, "NO!" in a firm manner and then take it to the previously designated spot. Wait on the spot with the dog and praise it once it has done potty. Don't take it for a walk as that would give a wrong signal to the dog that if it dirties the house it will be taken for a walk.
Training an older dog would involve careful observation of its behavior. You may not yet know its habits so the best thing to do is to take the dog out 3-4 times a day to signal that this is the time for it to eliminate. For dogs routine is essential so please make sure that it is taken out the same time every day so that it knows which the designated time is. Once you have established a routine the accidents will completely disappear.
r "click" once you pressed far enough, and another when you released it. A dog clicker is similar, but doesn't look so much like a toy.
vior when they hear the click, you can transition them by saying the command, then click, then follow with a treat and praise when the dog performs properly. After a bit, the dog will respond to the spoken command, and will also realize that the spoken praise equals the reward, and you can move on. As you can see, starting out with the command, action, click, treat process can be much more efficient and less confusing to the dog and make it easier for you to teach multiple behaviors.
Most dogs are a lot more intelligent than people give them credit for. Unfortunately, what seems to be a lack of intelligence is merely stubbornness. This is especially the case with breeds like Beagles. When we got our first beagle, which is a hound, and a pack dog with a smell-centric world, I nearly swore that when the creator gave them a sensitive nose, they didn't have enough room for a decent size brain. What turned out was just a massive case of stubborn. Once I got used to how they acted, I found beagles to be a very intelligent breed.
With good clicker training, or any training method for that manner, a dog will respond to a verbal (or even physical) cue and verbal praise for their action. The need for treats or praise will no longer be needed once the dog realizes the action pleases you.
As you know, clicker training is only one of many methods to train your dog. Some people think the clicker is an additional implement you really don't need, but I've seen quicker, with more consistent progress than methods that don't utilize a clicker.
With clicker training you will find that it is possible to mark and reinforce nearly any behaviour

Choosing the Best Ferret Fooding a ferret into the home but you don't know what to feed them? Or, are you a long term ferret owner that wants to make sure you are getting it right?
ows of different feeds for cats and dogs, but little or nothing in the way of ferret food.
If you've been a ferret owner for a while you may have cracked the first part of the ferret food puzzle, but knowing that you often have to find a good pet store to get ferret food is only part of the solution.
Ferret nutrition is a developing science, spurred on by the increasing popularity of ferrets. New pet food products may have a better understanding of the science but a few guiding principles should help you to make the right food choices. Here are some key tips.
settle for a dry food heavy diet, though that doesn't mean you can't mix it up a bit. Just make sure it's ferret safe.
og/" jQuery1295545382603="14">Ferret Tipshange your current eating habits and lifestyle. For each individual person, "the thing", the one thing that finally motivates you to go for it, is different. You have to find your thing; the person, or place, or photo, or health issue that motivates YOU. I recommend taking pictures of yourself so you can no longer avoid knowing what you look like to others. You have to be honest with yourself, even if you are not honest about your weight on your driver's license!
Sometimes the photos alone are enough to motivate you. If that doesn't do it, maybe there is some hot guy you like (or some husband you want to keep!), or a trip you want to take, or a cute outfit that you want to look good in. Whatever your motivation is, post it on the fridge and all around your house and keep it in the forefront of your mind at all times. I kept several things in my mind during my weight loss. One was a photo of myself looking like the Goodyear Blimp's younger sister. The other was that my knees were starting to go and I thought about having to use a lift system to get up the stairs to my house. That one really motivated me. The idea is to find something that gets you motivated and gets you started.
· I am a big believer in the power of affirmations and visualization. It is a very powerful message to the universe and to your sub-conscious mind when you write down your hopes and dreams as if you already have them. I used a journal and wrote things like: "I am healthy and thin", "I weigh 130 pounds", "I am a size 5". You get the idea. The trick is to write the sentences AS IF YOU ALREADY ARE AND ALREADY HAVE THE THINGS YOU ARE WRITING ABOUT. Do not write "I will be", or "I wish I was", or "I want". Once you have your affirmation list, LOOK AT IT EVERY DAY, best is in the morning before you start your day (while you are drinking your green tea!) and even better, all throughout the day and before you go to bed.
To go with your written affirmations, VISUALIZE AND FEEL YOURSELF as the thin person you are. Sit up!! Hold your body like a thin person, walk like a thin person, talk like a thin person. Visualize yourself in the clothes you want to wear, FEEL IT, BE IT! This is an important part of weight loss, do not skip this step, it really helps! One of the things I did is when I was huffing and puffing up the steps from the beach to my house was that I pictured myself bouncing and even running up those steps. Now it is true! Visualize yourself on vacation with lots of energy and cute clothes, visualize yourself buckling your seat belt without holding in your stomach, visualize yourself zipping up adorable Size 5 jeans with ease. The more you do this, the easier your weight loss will be. Trust me on this.
· It is so important to do things that make you feel good about yourself during this time. Please take off those ugly sweats, cut them up and use them for cleaning the house and buy yourself some new clothes that you feel good in, no matter what size they are. NO FRUMPS!!!! eBay, Torrid.com and Alight.com were a Godsend for me as I was able to buy really cute plus size clothing that made me feel great. Don't go crazy, because your new clothes wont fit you for long! Keep cleaning out your closet as clothes get too big on you. Donate them to your fat friends who will want to know what you are doing or even sell them on eBay. Don't keep around "fat clothes" just in case. You don't want to have that to fall back on. Don't create safety nets for yourself this time. Go for it or Go HOME! Get a manicure, get your hair done, treat yourself like the princess (or prince) that you are! The trick is to keep you feeling good about yourself and not fall back into self pity and overeating. If looking in a mirror frustrates you, don't look in the mirror until it feels good!
· Raise your hand if you are a member of The Clean Plate Club. Yep, I thought so. I am the same way, there are starving children in Africa, you know. I have learned to ask for smaller portions because it is so hard for me to leave food on my plate. If you are still served too big portions, repeat after me, "It is okay to leave food on my plate. Worms and bugs need food too, it will get eaten by something eventually, it doesn't have to be me." Keep saying it. Stop eating when you are full. It is always good to drink green tea 10 minutes before you eat. You will feel fuller faster and will have that extra motivation and willpower that you need.
· It is very important to identify and release the belief systems that keep you eating food to self sabotage your dreams. If you are overweight, your beliefs are holding you there. It is very possible to change these beliefs with your persistent new thoughts and emotions. EFT and other belief releasing methods are great for indentifying and releasing limiting beliefs.
· Don't put off your life until you get thin. Start doing the things you have been putting off. Live NOW as you would if you were already thin. Be thin now!
· Find a long term eating plan that works for you and that you can stick to. What is important is that it is a program that you can stay on without feeling deprived and hungry (feeling deprived leads to overeating!) and that will support you after you have reached your goal.
· Sorry, but you cannot get out of the exercise thing. It is essential not only for weight loss, but for your overall health. Start out slow, don't push yourself. Take a walk with a friend or your poor dog who never gets out. Find fun things to do for exercise that you don't dread. As you lose weight, you will find that your energy level is higher and you will WANT TO EXERCISE. Really! I never thought it could be true, but as I got thinner, I actually wanted to exercise because I had so much energy. It just feels so good for so many reasons. There are also lots of great online workout programs too.
· Stay conscious when you eat. If you are like me, you can go into a kind of food stupor and you don't even think or breath until everything on your plate is gone and then you wonder where it went! Put your fork down between every few bites, eat slowly, chew, chew, chew! I still have to remind myself to do this. It is a hard habit to break, but so important to do for your health and weight loss goals.
· Be kind to yourself. Don't beat yourself up if you really want to eat something. If you are going to feel guilty before and after eating, you are not going to enjoy it and it will be even worse, body, mind and soul. Enjoy your meal, enjoy every single bite, slowly. Then just get right back on and continue. You deserve it and you are worth it. Be like thin people and when you overeat, compensate. Get right back to listening to your body. And if you are going to eat something that you consider bad, like a hamburger, be sure to eat it with leafy greens like a salad to help your body digest it.
· Congratulate yourself on the big and small victories and successes. I threw a party when I was able to cross my legs again with ease (but of course I didn't tell anyone what the party really was celebrating!)
· Do not let yourself get to the starving point as that can lead to a major overeating binge. It is always better to eat 6 small meals during the day, or at least have a snack between meals to keep your metabolism up. I usually snack on nuts (don't go overboard, but they are a good source of protein and very filling) or fruits or both.
· One of the best things you can do for your overall health and weight loss is to stop eating processed foods. Fill your diet with whole foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains. Foods that are still in their original, natural form. Highly processed breads, pastas, meats, and other foods that no longer resemble what they once were will slow down your weight loss. Fried foods are out too, they are just horrible for your system. Become a lean, mean, greaseless machine!
· Drink lots of water. This helps with weight loss but will also help to keep your skin hydrated to avoid stretch marks and hanging skin. Use lots of lotion too. Coconut oil is one of the best products for your skin!
· Get yourself some support. Hang with people with like minded goals. Get a Life Coach who will support you and keep you accountable. Join other groups that will support you in your dreams.
· Look in the mirror everyday and say "Love You" and mean it, no matter where you are with your weight loss goals!

sizcache="2" sizset="70"> e diseases discussed in this article can affect any person, immunocompromised people such as infants, the elderly or those who are HIV+ need to be extra careful. This article looks at skin diseases of dogs and cats that can present a risk to their owners.
Actually, considering the large number of people interacting closely with small animals on a daily basis, the overall risk of contracting disease from a pet with skin disease is remarkably low. In general, keeping pets clean, free from parasites and healthy, as well as good personal and household hygiene such as proper hand washing, will minimize the risk of catching a disease from your pet. However, people belonging to risk categories (the immunosuppressed) need more specific advice.
The increase in pet travel, and the occurrence of breeders sourcing stock from overseas, has made the risk of exposure to new diseases a little greater. The most common skin diseases transmissible to humans that occur in dogs and cats are sarcoptic mange (scabies), cheyletiellosis (mite infestation), fleas and dermatophytosis (ringworm). In general, young and newly acquired animals, especially those from animal shelters, are most likely to be affected by these diseases. Below we look at each of these diseases more closely.
t species, and the most common one which affects dogs and foxes only has an estimated 20 per cent chance of transmission to humans. Prolonged skin to skin contact is the main route of transmission, with the disease presenting as an itchy rash with small red spots. Usually, disease in the human will clear up of its own accord, once the dog has been treated appropriately with a medicated shampoo or spot on drug. Occasionally, humans may need their own treatment though. It is very important to treat all in contact dogs as well. Unlike fleas, these mites do not tend to survive for long in the environment so reinfection is rare once the dog has been treated.

is essential between the medical and veterinary professionals involved. The goal is to maintain disease free status in the pet, whilst practicing thorough hygiene measures by the person. Being immunocompromised does not mean you cannot have a pet, but the following points should be taken into consideration:
1. If acquiring a pet, make sure it is a healthy one, vet checked and not from a source rife with diseases.
2. Safe feeding practices
3. Avoid your pet coming into contact with contaminated material from other animals (e.g. feces)
4. Vaccination annually
5. Good worming control (every 3 months in adult dogs and cats)
6. Good flea prevention (usually monthly for spot ons)
7. Good dental care (brushing your pets teeth, dental chews to keep teeth clean)
8. Regular general health checks by your veterinarian
you the parent ask, they are more than likely heading for some sort of disciplinary act. The child by no means begrudgingly obeys you. Usually the child will be quite happy doing what you ask of him/her. The same can be said for your relationship with your dog. By not installing pack seniority with your dog, your dog will walk all over you, control you doing what he likes when he wants. Your dog understands pack seniority, he/she will obey you readily and happily knowing that only good things will happen. (praise, treating)
Being authoritative when dealing with your dog is not cruel or mistreatment, it is a case of you the dominant figure, conveying to your dog that if not obeyed, you the Alpha will react accordingly in order to attain the desired result. In the wild, when a pack member is out of line, the Alpha punishes the individual either by nipping, pinning down, etc. We as humans have taken the place of the wild Alpha and we must continue to implicate behavior that is already in the dog's bloodline.
When you call your dog, make sure you are ready to react to what your dog's actions are. At first your dog will not even know what the command is, so punishing him/her for not obeying is not an option!
Below are points to follow:
-When starting to teach the come command, have your dog on a leash.
- Utter the command and gently but firmly pull the dog to you.
- Praise and treat.
- Upon comprehension, continue these actions progressively lengthening the distance that your dog has to travel to reach you.
- If need be at first, you can show the treat to your dog to entice the desired result.
- Upon moderate success, you can throw in distractions to tempt your dog.
- If adding distractions that your dog is fooled by, your "gentle firm" pull should become firmer.
- To test the level of comprehention, give the command and wait for your dog to react. If the reaction is positive, then guiding with the leash is not necessary.
- Upon comprehension, your "gentle firm" pull can cease.
- Always, always reward good behavior.
The frequency of which you practice this exercise, will determine the speed at which your dog learns the command. Your intent is to convey to the dog that coming to you when you call him is the best thing in the world, and if done properly you will attain a crisp outcome sooner than later.

Unlike fleas, these mites do not tend to survive for long in the environment so reinfection is rare once the dog has been treated.
ids). However, treatment is recommended so that the risk of transmission to humans is lessened. Dogs and cats are usually treated with a topical solution of itraconazole, while affected humans are usually prescribed an anti fungal cream to apply to affected areas.
olves the bacterium Staphylococcus intermedius. Contrast this to humans, where the main cause of bacterial skin infection is Staphylococcus aureus, and it is clear that the risk of transmission to humans is very low.
is essential between the medical and veterinary professionals involved.
